Anyone with children can attest that photos accumulate FAST, and thank goodness we are no longer limited by film and processing costs. Today, you press the shutter button and immediately your photo is developed, no more waiting days for development. It’s a prime example of instant gratification. And in digital form, there are so many other advantages. The ability to back up the photos to cloud services is an advantage that cannot be overstated. In cases of natural disasters like fire, floods or anything else, so often a key source of grief is the loss of all the old family photos. Digital photos backed up to the cloud are not affected by such things as this.
But as wonderful as this age of digital photography is, there are still cases where photos need to be in printed form, for example picture frames that go on night stands and hang on the wall. But beyond that, the most precious photos of all are those old vintage photos from earlier family generations, and these are the photos most often found to be damaged, torn, stained and scratched. This is where my story comes in, which I will share with you here. Perhaps you will find your situation to be similar.
When my grandmother passed in the late 90s, my parents took on the task of dispersing her belongings. Many of these were sentimental items that remained in our family, and among the most precious to us, were the old family photos. As you can imagine, there were many photos collected over all those years, and some of these go back as far as the 1800’s, and early 1900’s. Surprisingly, some of those old vintage photos were in pretty good condition, but so many more (at least half) had been damaged in various ways. In our particular case, mice infestation was a key issue, but also just general age induced damage. I felt so lucky that I had the tools and skills to restore the damaged photos to near perfect condition in many cases.
These experiences have given me a heightened awareness of just how priceless old family photos are, and I knew I was not alone in feeling this way. It will take another generation or two for all the old paper based photos from earlier generations to fade away, and for some it will never go away. There are those that cling to the nostalgia and authenticity of the old family phots stored away in a shoe box, but the damage they often endure is heart breaking. I know what it meant to me and to our family and I know that so many of you care about your old family photos just as much. My ambition to help others in similar situations, comes from someplace very deep and personal, and I truly know the despair you feel when a precious photo is damaged. The joy and relief I felt from restoring my own family photos, has inspired me to help others, and this gave rise to Picture-PerfectStudios.com
